Lungau in Salzburg

Golfing vacations in Salzburg’s Lungau region

A golfing vacation in the Lungau region is a great tip for both beginners and advanced golfers! The Lungau-Katschberg GC features a very beautiful and flat 18-hole golf facility, a charming 9-hole course and a generous practice facility.

The Open9 course with its eight par 3 holes and one par 4 is perfect for beginners and avid players of short courses. Just like a “long” golf course, it also includes carefully designed hazards. Golfers do not need a club membership to play this course.

The 18-hole championship course is located in the flat Murtal valley and surrounded by the mystic mountain scenery that is typical of this sunny golf region. In 1992, golf course designer Keith Preston created this golfing gem at 1050 metres above sea level, which follows the natural course of the Mur river and presents many interesting challenges for golfers.

Thanks to its location between the Radstädter Tauern and Kärntner Nockberge mountain ranges, the Lungau golf region is well protected from the wind, has hardly any fog and boasts air and water of the highest quality. After a good round of golf, visitors can relax in the mountains, on wonderful mountain lakes or in a beautifully cultivated landscape marked by ancient traditions. The UNESCO awarded the Lungau the status of a biosphere reserve in 2012, with the aim of preserving the region’s nature, quality of living, traditions and typical culture.

Facts why you should choose a golf vacation in Lungau

and why the Lungau is worth a golf vacation

A wonderful golfing vacation is not just about beautiful golf courses and great golf resorts. It’s the “little things” that can make all the difference. Below you will find a list of further criteria to help you make your decision. Is there anything else you require for a blissful golfing vacation?

1

Castles and palaces

Imposing castle complexes still recall the strategic importance of the region’s location. Mauterndorf Castle, for instance, was built in the 13th century and was supported by road tolls. Today, the castle takes its visitors on a fascinating journey into the Middle Ages. The ruins of Finstergrün Castle are an exciting fairy-tale castle for visitors of all ages and Moosham Palace, now a very idyllic place, witnessed the prosecution of witches, magicians and beggars in bygone times.

2

Flying over the Lungau region

At 1100 metres above sea level, Mauterndorf Airfield is Austria’s highest airfield for glider aircrafts. This makes it an ideal starting point for cross-country flying. Tandem paragliding also offers splendid, wide views of the mountains, valleys, moors, castles and palaces of this sunniest and southernmost region in the province of Salzburg.

3

Ramingstein silver mine

If you are looking for adventures off the fairways and greens during your vacation, we recommend visiting the mining exhibition in Ramingstein, where you can get an idea of how silver was mined more than 200 years ago.

The guided family tour is especially popular. It allows visitors of all ages to cast their own little metal ingots in the old furnace and to try panning for gold and silver treasures.
